Solar system models are built for better understanding of the universe. It gives a better idea of the earth and all the planets surrounding it. Some of the models are made interactively while the others are just for viewing. There are models build especially for the kids for illustrating all the details of the planet easily. The students will be able to differentiate the size of one planet from the other. Also they will be able to know the relative distance of one planet to the other. Most of these solar models are mechanical models. These mechanical models are called orreries. They illustrate the relative positions of the planets and the moon in the solar system.
The size and the distance of the planets are not built to scale since building the model distance and size of the planets require lot of space and material. For example the distance between the earth and the sun is about 12,000 times the diameter of the earth. There are many models build in every state to show the people the planets around us. It is not possible to build such a big model which people will not be able to view with the naked eye. So these models are built based on some reference. Traditional orreries moved and used some clockwork to illustrate the relative speed of the objects accurately. These models are scaled correctly in time instead of distance.
The thousand-yard model is a scale model that easily replicates the solar system. It spans about one kilometer in length. In this model, the earth is represented by a peppercorn. Another model known as the 1: 10,000,000,000 model where 100,000 kilometer is represented by 1 cm. The Sweden Solar system is believed to be the largest scale model in the world. Apart from these models, some of the models are made based on real time objects like classroom model and sports model. These models help the people in the respective fields to understand the solar system easily.
