Solar system is one of the interesting areas to explore. The solar system consists of the sun and other astronomical objects bound to it. All of these are believed to have formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Most of the mass in the space is contained within the eight relatively solitary planets. These eight planets are circular and lie within a flat disc called the ecliptic plane. The four smaller planets that lie within this plane are the Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These are also known as the terrestrial planets. They are primarily composed of rock and metal. The other four planets are known as the gas giants who are substantially more massive than the terrestrials. The two largest planets, Jupiter and Saturn are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. The outer most planets are the Uranus and Neptune is composed of ices.
The solar system is mostly populated by smaller objects. The asteroid belt lies between the Mars and Jupiter is similar to the terrestrial planets. It is composted of rock and metal. Trans-Neptunian objects lie beyond the Neptune’s orbit and are composed mainly of ices such as water, ammonia, and methane. There are five individual objects within the region namely the Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. These planets orbit with their own gravity. There are various other small objects in the solar system like the comets, and the centaurs. Interplanetary dust travels freely between these regions. The flow of wind known as the solar wind from the sun creates a bubble in the interstellar medium. This is known as the heliosphere. The solar wind extends to a distance of the scattered disc.
The six planets along with the dwarf planets are orbited by the natural satellites. These are named as the moon, named after the earth’s moon. Planetary rings of dust and other particles encircle the outer planets. The other objects of the solar system are composed of rock which is the collective name for compounds with high melting points.
